Changes Coming Regarding Inter-Province Labour Mobility

Last month, Ontario’s government announced forthcoming changes designed to improve labour mobility between the provinces and territories for several regulated trades and professions, including architecture. While the Canadian Reciprocity Agreement has long been in place, effective January 1, 2026, eligible architects from other jurisdictions in Canada will be able to practise in Ontario for up to six months while their full reciprocity application is assessed.

To achieve this "Deemed Certification," individuals seeking this status are required to submit the notification and proof of licence to the OAA. In turn, the Association must acknowledge the application within 10 business days. More information will be shared as the date approaches, but to learn more about current processes regarding Canadian reciprocity, click here.
